Beholden 05:29
The day that things changed between us Don’t want it to stop, you know The trade of motion demeans us Our momentum stopped, controlled I wish that I could spit and scream and flail for what I want mine But it’s just more in my character to fade to black as a thought, kind The way I cautiously need us It hurts not to start, you know Today I open my heart out My pandora’s box unclothed There are just too many articles written by ironic life Just hold me till I can remember my vulnerable mind How do I separate the magic moments, not to be beholden While lately there’s been no magic moments where I have been holden How do I separate the magic moments, not to be beholden While lately there’s been no magic moments where I have been holden The ray, like lightning deceives us Illuminates a warm glow Betray two weeks that dream us Till second place burns, burns cold Each spring I find myself left with the remnants of forgotten snow I am a token, not be broken, yes, this I know The way the taken have seen us I am their hope, controlled The fray of rot that seats us Stuck behind glass pedestal I have grown to laugh at this place I’ve been placed to find It doesn’t suit me all much better than loneliness or lack of trying How do I separate the magic moments, not to be beholden While lately there’s been no magic moments where I have been holden How do I separate the magic moments, not to be beholden While lately there’s been no magic moments where I have been holden

At the top of the world, at the top of the world Their feelings won’t change no matter what we do At the top of the world, at the top of the world Their feelings won’t change no matter what we do The suitcase inside of our hearts won’t ever do The suitcase inside of our hearts won’t ever do At the top of the world, at the top of the world Their feelings won’t change no matter what we do At the top of the world, at the top of the world Their feelings won’t change no matter what we do They’re bought and sold so many times, it won’t ever do They’re bought and sold too many times it won’t ever do But at the heart of the world, at the heart of the world Things always change no matter what you do But at the heart of the world, at the heart of the world Things always change no matter what you do The smooth change inside of our hearts won’t ever do The smooth change inside of our hearts won’t ever do Don’t go lying to yourself Cause at the heart of the world, at the heart of the world Things always change no matter what you do At the heart of the world, at the heart of the world Things always change no matter what you do The suitcase inside of our hearts won’t ever do The smooth change inside of our hearts won’t ever do At the top of the world, at the top of the world At the heart of the world, at the heart of the world To keep us all from the end To keep us all from the end (just a while longer, just a while longer) Cause at the heart of the world things always change At the heart of the world it’s so, so very strange We do things outside of our norms (we) might (not) ever do We do things outside of our norms we won’t ever do To keep us from the end

Time Never Grows Back Not even when you need it to, you’re on your own cause time never grows back And you want to, yeah And you want to, yeah Fly high like a bird in the sky (so very high) Getting poisoned slowly By medicine But what gets medicined Sometimes never grows back Time never grows back Not even if you need it to, you’re on your own cause time never grows back Time Never Grows Back

Sorry Spider 02:10
I’m sorry spider, I’ve been programmed to be scared of you, what do I do? I’m sorry spider I’ve been programmed to be scared of you, so I’ll step on you For a little while I’ve been running round this place And I see you everywhere So I’ll find an object to take you down Like a frying pan, or a hardcover book I’m sorry sorry sorry I’m sorry spider, I’ve been programmed to be scared of you, what do I do? I’m sorry spider I’ve been programmed to be scared of you, so I’ll step on you

Sitting in the endless plight That started when you faded from my eyes You brought me up to let me down And then to spread my entrails all around Well there’s not another tear that will fall from my eyes to vindicate the traitorous sight of you dear The smile that you wore just functioned as a disguise and then you turned to run and hide it’s true dear The standards that I hold you to are the ones I use to go about my life Seems I raised the bar a little high for someone stuck in their own mind, it’s true dear Well there’s not another tear that will fall from my eyes to vindicate the traitorous sight of you dear The tears that fell formed craters around my eyes less lethal than your toxic mind dear, it’s true dear It’s to you I owe this rage, it’s a toll you never had to pay The others redeemed themselves, but you were my judas when I descended into hell So I wish you well in your own sh** But f*** with me twice and I’m not gonna forget Your apology is empty with the space inside you tried to hard to fill There’s not another tear that will fall from my eyes to vindicate the traitorous sight of you dear The smile that you wore just functioned as a disguise and that’s all that remains of you and I, dear

So our heroes appear, washed up on the shore of a desert island far from home In the churning of generational tides, we an opening. A crack. A way to make the world that they’ve seen closer to the world that they want it to be My spirit’s been writhing, reaching towards the light shined by darkness Slowly as trees bend Branches Hanging across timelines I’ll learn my essence in each one Whether brimstone or pearl, fashion me like diamonds Spread the seeds of my truth like reincarnation Carnations The way ideas flower The way the world twist round towards justus Within each day, I know that I’m the one To find my way before the darkness comes I stay up late till I see the morning sun So I can find my way among everyone STUPIDITY BURNS HOLES IN MY BRAIN THE WAY MILITARISM CUTS A HOLE IN MY SOUL Someone said they’d like to know somebody And some would say they don’t know what that means But all I know is that to know somebody, you know the part of your self that can see them for who they are Who they truly are

Lost 03:15
I want to get lost No satellite to tell me where I am Just wandering around with no middleman I want to get lost Because roads are just circles with no end, unless you get lost and reach a different bend It opens up so sweetly when I look with just my mind I want to get lost Wanderlust while lazing around again Yeah, then I’d be lost without a care I want to get lost and found in a different air This town’s getting small with a need to get there, But it opens up so sweetly when I look with just my mind Look with just my mind

Staring at the keys to the battle Trynna lead the beast to the well Staring at the keys to the battle Momma know you do that well Now you’ve got to cease with the bottle Tell em bring peace to themselves Now you’ve got to cease with the bottle Momma know you that well In our first dreams, it’s all we know We don’t ask why In our first dreams there’s nothing before So we have a good time Now you’ve got the trees to get toppled Tell them to police themselves Now you’ve got the trees to get toppled Momma know you do that well Now you’ve got the keys to the battle Now you’ve gotta bring the beast beast to the well Now you’ve got the keys to the battle Your momma know you do that well In our first dreams it’s all we know We don’t ask why In our first dreams there’s nothing before So we have a good time

Each day I’ve named by the color of its hue Yesterday was a lavender or a blue What it means I don’t know What it means I don’t know but for me it’s true What it means I don’t know but it could mean the same thing to you And that’s on us While the fuel inside our hearts overflew (That’s on us) Till it left a puddle from overuse What we’re doing I don’t know, what we’re doing I don’t know. Think of all the ways we could rise Let fear NOT stop you from trying But how far will it take before it all goes away? That’s on us Feelings that come over you That’s on us Stuck inside a mirror of thought I knew What it means I don’t know, what it means I don’t know That stagnant air we breathe Will pop like bubbles in the breeze That stagnant air we breathe will pop li k e b u b b le s i n t h e b r e e z e . Each day I’ve named by the color of its hue Yesterday was lavender or maybe a little blue What it means I don’t know but for me it’s true It might mean the same thing to me as it does to you That stagnant air we breathe will Pop like bubbles in the breeze

about

SunSp.t is the project of Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Musician Joe MacPhail. The record features songs and compositions performed and mixed entirely by Joe. Joe is known for his live and recorded work with the Folk and Jazz scenes of Durham and Chapel Hill. This record offers a pure and distilled version of his creative expression. The album is created with a hybrid approach combining musicianship, songwriting and modern production. The project features a combination of vocals and vocoder singing alongside an army of keyboards and drums, with some guitars thrown into the mix. Lizzie Ross (of Violet Bell) and Emily Musolino (of Emily Musolino Band) perform guest vocals on the songs Beholden and Time Never Grows Back. Saman Khoujinian (of T. Gold) mastered the record in a manner that allows the songs to pop out of the speakers.

The album features songs about living life to the fullest in a technological world sliding into disarray. It is part of an international musical love movement. The album features themes of accepting impermanence, questioning power dynamics, growing from life’s hurdles and moving with intention. The album is anti-war and anti-imperialism.

Many of the songs were created from scratch in a day or two. Joe performed instruments on top of each other with the intention of creating a visceral experience and capturing a specific feeling while in the flow state. Every song features its own instrument combination, or unique band of Joe’s. The final track, Lavender Or Blue, is a live-performed piano and bass with an overdubbed vocoder melody. The album ends with the sentiment “That stagnant air we breathe will pop like bubbles in the breeze”

Joe performs live and in the studio with The Oblations, DreamRoot, T. Gold, XOXOK, Matt Phillips & The Back Pocket, Violet Bell, Abigail Dowd, and more.
